What constitutes the neck?

For such a small area, the human neck performs the all-important task of connecting your head to your body. To accomplish this job, your neck is made up of seven vertebrae, also called the cervical spine, which are supported by tendons, muscles, and ligaments. These components all work toward supporting your head, allowing your head to move freely, and providing passage for your neural and circulatory systems from your brain to the rest of your body.

What causes neck pain?

The human head weighs nine to 12 pounds and is solely supported by your neck. This hardworking area also controls the entire movement of your head, providing 180-degree rotation in addition to up-and-down and forward-and-back movements. Given its duties, neck pain is not uncommon and is often caused by:

  • Traumatic injury, such as a car accident
  • Degenerative joint disease, such as arthritis
  • Ruptured, bulging, or herniated discs
  • Muscle strain

This list is by no means exhaustive — because of the complexity and fragility of your neck, neck pain can strike for any number of reasons.

How is neck pain treated?

As a trained chiropractor, Dr. Miller has extensive experience treating chronic and acute neck pain using the following treatments:

Spinal Adjustments

Spinal adjustments are the mainstay of chiropractic care because of their ability to correct spinal misalignments. These misalignments are called subluxations and through carefully applied pressure and manipulation, Dr. Miller is able to restore your joints to their original positions, relieving the pressure on the surrounding tissue and allowing your body to heal itself properly.

Massage Therapy

The function of your cervical spine is contingent upon the many connective tissues and muscles that surround your vertebrae. If these tissues are tight, which causes pain and limited mobility, massage therapy works to release the tension. Dr. Miller offers deep tissue massage and myofascial massage.

Instrument Adjustments

When human hands aren’t enough, Dr. Miller is equipped with specialized tools to aid in correcting spinal subluxations.

Table Adjustments

A drop table allows Dr. Miller to perform gentler adjustments by using applied pressure combined with a gravitational force.

To treat neck pain, Dr. Miller often uses a combination of these therapies for maximum effect.
